Course on Emulsion Polymerization Processes

September 11-15, 2006

Polymerization processes in aqueous dispersed phase spawned during the past recent decades. Environmental pressures, a constant market demand for developing products of increased performance, and the need for cost reduction are common language in modern industry. A loose knowledge of the key factors controlling emulsion polymerization (EP) processes and their influence on the design of the product characteristics may reduce the probability of company survival in a market place that changes with an ever increasing pace.

The Course on Emulsion Polymerization Processes is designed to provide a sound basis of the fundamental aspects of emulsion polymerization. Participants shall benefit from a combination of their tacit knowledge obtained in industrial daily practice with the in-depth knowledge to be provided during the course. Beginners shall particularly profit from the thorough and interconnected approach of the course program. Relevant progresses in EP science and technology will be addressed, emphasizing their industrial application.

It is our feeling that the Emulsion Polymerization Processes Course will provide a tool that will help participants in the challenging emulsion polymerization business.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Donostia-San Sebastián,

EMULSION POLYMERIZATION PROCESSES

This is a One-Week course offered by the Institute for Polymer Materials (POLYMAT) of the University of the Basque Country, which will be held in Donostia-San Sebastian, Spain on September 11-15, 2006. For more details see below.

Emulsion polymers are truly “product by process” materials whose properties are determined during the polymerization process. The course will focus on the understanding of the fundamental basis of emulsion polymerization and on the use of this understanding to manipulate process conditions to achieve a consistent production of improved products. The fundamentals of latex rheology, film formation and adhesion of polymers, key aspects in the application of emulsion polymers, will also be studied.

PARTICIPANTS

The course is designed for scientists and engineers from industry and academia actively interested in emulsion polymerization. English will be the official language of the course.

LOCATION AND TRANSPORT FACILITIES

The course will take place at the Faculty of Chemistry of The University of the Basque Country Campus in Donostia-San Sebastian (see attached map).  Lectures will start at 14:30 on Monday and at 8:30 in the morning from Tuesday to Friday,  and will be finished by 17:30.

Donostia-San Sebastian is a small city on the coast, located in the North of Spain, near the border with France. It is easily accessible by plane via the Donostia-San Sebastian Airport (30 minutes away by taxi), Bilbao Airport (60 minutes away by taxi) and  Biarritz Airport (in France, 40 minutes away by taxi). It is also connected by train and bus with the main Spanish cities like Madrid or Barcelona.

Deadline for registration July 31, 2006.

 ACCOMMODATION

A limited number of  rooms has been blocked at special rates, in two different hotels and a residence near the course location.

Each participant should arrange directly his reservation and will be charged by the hotel for room costs and extras.

Otherwise, an exhaustive list of accommodations is available on the following webpage: http://www.donostia.org

IMPORTANT: The availability and price of these rooms are  guaranteed until the 30th of June. In all cases, you must arrange your reservation providing the "EMULSION COURSE 2006" reference.
