The Severn Estuary holds the second highest tidal range in the world and within this Swansea Bay benefits from an average tidal range during spring tides of 8.5m.  The construction of a tidal lagoon to harness this natural resource would help the UK transition a low carbon future with greater energy security and lower electricity costs, while providing regenerative economic and recreational benefits to the local community.

The forces generated by the gravitational attraction of the moon and the sun's movements relative to the earth produce strong marine tidal flows. These tidal flows are locally concentrated by landmasses creating 'hotspots' with strong tidal currents. These marine currents represent a vast renewable energy resource. The CoRMaT contra-rotating tidal generator has been designed from first principles to meet this challenge

Minesto develops a new concept for tidal power plants called Deep Green. Deep Green is based on a fundamentally new principle for electricity generation from tidal currents.

Redefining wave power. CorPower Ocean has developed an advanced compact high-efficiency Wave Energy Converter (WEC), inspired by the pumping principles of the human heart.

CorPower’s technology offers an exceptionally high power density, 5 times higher than competing technologies, at less than a third of the cost.

Our aim is to establish a new generation of wave power for utility-scale energy generation offering a cost of energy that can compete with conventional non-renewable energy resources.

Kymogen Wave Energy Generator. The Kymogen, is a platform that will float offshore, tethered to a mooring. When a wave approaches, the platform will rise, pulling on the mooring tether. As the wave passes, the platform resets to its original position for the next wave. The mooring tether is attached to a drive system inside of the KymoGen. When the mooring tether is pulled, it spins a flywheel, storing the energy.

Aquamarine wave power. Aquamarine Power's Oyster wave power technology captures energy in nearshore waves and converts it into clean sustainable electricity. Essentially Oyster is a wave-powered pump which pushes high pressure water to drive an onshore hydro-electric turbine.

Northwest Energy Innovations NWEI is developing the AzuraTM wave power technology for converting the endless supply of ocean waves into electricity to meet the rapidly growing global demand for renewable energy. Unlike other wave energy technologies, Azura extracts energy from both the heave (vertical) and surge (horizontal) motion of the wave, producing power from the relative motion between the hull and float.

CalWave provides a solution to harness the renewable power of ocean waves to produce electricity and freshwater. Our device is a novel Wave Energy Converter (WEC) called the Wave Carpet that is simple and scalable. Our innovative approach was inspired by the ability of a muddy seafloor to effectively absorb overpassing ocean waves within only a few wavelengths. The unique converter design uses a synthetic-seabed-carpet that has the ability to extract wave energy the same way.
